iPad Setup Checklist

Settings → Bluetooth → pair your Pencil, or simply attach it magnetically to the iPad's side.

Then go to Settings → Apple Pencil → Double Tap and choose your preferred action — switch between current tool and eraser, switch between current tool and last used, show color palette, or show ink attributes. Most people use "Switch between current tool and eraser" since it's the fastest way to correct mistakes.

Settings → Multitasking & Gestures → Stage Manager → ON

Stage Manager lets you resize windows, overlap them, and group apps into workspaces — much closer to a desktop experience. When you connect an external monitor, Stage Manager enables extended display (not just mirroring), so you get two independent screens. This is only available on iPads with M1 chip or later.

Tap the three dots (···) at the top of any app → choose Split View or Slide Over.

Alternatively, swipe up from the bottom to reveal the Dock, then drag an app from the Dock to the left or right edge of the screen. Split View gives each app half (or a third) of the screen. Slide Over floats a narrow app window over a full-screen app — great for quick messaging while watching a video.

Connect an external keyboard (Magic Keyboard, Smart Keyboard Folio, or any Bluetooth keyboard) → hold the Globe key (🌐) for 1 second.

A cheat sheet appears showing every keyboard shortcut available in the current app. This is the single fastest way to learn iPad keyboard shortcuts. Cmd+H = Home, Cmd+Space = Spotlight, Cmd+Tab = App Switcher. Every app has its own set — Globe key shows them all.

On your Mac: System Settings → Displays → click the "+" button → Add Display → select your iPad.

Both devices must be signed into the same Apple ID with Bluetooth and Wi-Fi enabled. Sidecar works wirelessly or via USB-C cable (cable is more stable). Once connected, your iPad becomes a full second monitor — you can drag windows to it, use Apple Pencil as input, and even use the iPad's Touch Bar emulation at the bottom.

On your Mac: System Settings → Displays → Advanced → Enable "Allow your pointer and keyboard to move between any nearby Mac or iPad"

Both devices need the same Apple ID and Wi-Fi network. Once enabled, just push your Mac cursor to the edge of the screen toward your iPad — the cursor moves onto the iPad automatically. You can type on the iPad with your Mac keyboard, drag and drop files between devices, and even copy/paste across them. It feels like magic.

With Apple Pencil: swipe diagonally from the bottom-right corner of the screen.

A small note window appears immediately — write or type anything. Quick Notes sync to the Notes app and can include links to whatever you were viewing when you created them. With a keyboard, press Globe + Q. It works from any app, any screen, at any time. Incredibly useful for jotting down ideas without switching context.

Connect a USB-C external drive or flash drive → open the Files app → look in the sidebar under "Locations."

The iPad supports APFS, exFAT, FAT32, and (read-only) NTFS drives. You can move files, rename, delete, and even open documents directly from the drive. For photographers, this means importing photos from an SD card reader directly into Lightroom — no computer needed.

Settings → Display & Brightness → True Tone → ON

True Tone adjusts the screen's color temperature to match ambient lighting — whites look warm under warm lights and cool under daylight. It makes reading much more comfortable. Auto-Brightness is usually on by default, but verify at Settings → Accessibility → Display & Text Size → Auto-Brightness. Both together save battery and reduce eye strain.

Settings → [your name] → iCloud → iCloud Drive → Sync this iPad → ON

With iCloud Drive on, every file you save on your iPad appears on your Mac, iPhone, and iCloud.com. The Files app becomes your universal file manager. If you work across Apple devices, this is non-negotiable — start a document on your Mac, edit it on your iPad with Apple Pencil, review it on your iPhone.

4-5 finger pinch = go Home. 4-finger swipe left/right = switch between recent apps.

These gestures replace pressing the Home button or swiping the bottom bar. A 4-finger swipe left or right lets you jump between your two most recent apps instantly — no need to open the App Switcher. Once these become muscle memory, you'll navigate the iPad faster than any other method.

Settings → Apple Pencil → Scribble → ON

With Scribble enabled, you can write with Apple Pencil in any text field — Safari search bar, Notes, Messages, even third-party apps — and iPadOS converts your handwriting to typed text in real time. Scratch out a word to delete it. Draw a circle around text to select it. It works surprisingly well, even with messy handwriting.

Settings → Focus → tap "+" to create a new Focus, or edit an existing one (e.g., Work). Customize which apps and people can notify you.

The key: turn off "Share Across Devices" for iPad-specific Focus modes. This way, silencing your iPad for drawing or studying won't silence your iPhone. You can also assign Focus modes to specific Home Screens — your Work focus shows only productivity apps, your Personal focus shows entertainment apps.

While playing a video, swipe up from the bottom of the screen (go Home). The video shrinks to a floating window.

You can drag the PiP window to any corner, pinch to resize it, or swipe it off-screen to hide the video while keeping audio playing. Works with FaceTime, Apple TV+, Netflix, YouTube (Premium), and many other apps. Double-tap the PiP window to go back to full-screen.

When the on-screen keyboard is visible, place two fingers on it and hold. The keys fade — now move your fingers to move the text cursor.

This is the best-kept secret of the iPad keyboard. Positioning the cursor by tapping the screen is frustrating and imprecise. The two-finger trackpad mode gives you pixel-perfect cursor control. You can also start with one finger on the space bar and hold — the keyboard turns into a trackpad for single-finger cursor movement.

Long-press on any empty area of the Home Screen → tap "+" in the top-left → browse and add widgets.

The iPad's large screen is perfect for widgets. Recommended setup: Weather (large), Calendar (medium), Notes (medium), and Batteries (small, to track Pencil/AirPods). You can stack multiple widgets in one spot and swipe between them — called a Smart Stack. iPadOS will automatically rotate the stack to show the most relevant widget based on time and your habits.
