MacBook Air M2 vs M5: Three-Year Upgrade Tested

Three years is the upgrade rhythm that keeps showing up in our reader mail. People who bought the MacBook Air M2 at launch in July 2022 are now watching their AppleCare expire, noticing Safari get laggy with the fifteen tabs they always kept open, and wondering whether the M5 is finally the one. We had both machines on the same desk for a week, the M2 a loaner from a designer friend who bought hers for Figma work, the M5 a review unit we configured to match: 16GB of memory and 512GB of storage. Same screen size, same chassis silhouette at a glance, four generations of Apple Silicon between them. The differences are real, but they are not evenly distributed across every task.

What Apple changed and what they quietly did not

The M2 MacBook Air was the first Air with the now-familiar flat-top design, MagSafe, and a notched 13.6-inch display. The M5 keeps the exact same industrial design at a glance — place them closed, side by side, and only the color palette gives it away. Under the hood, though, every subsystem has shifted. The M5 ships with a baseline of 16GB unified memory (the M2 started at 8GB), the neural engine is roughly 2.3x faster on Apple’s own benchmarks, and the SSD controller is finally back to using two NAND chips on the 512GB configuration, which was one of the M2’s stranger downgrades.

The M5 dropped the launch price by $100 while doubling base RAM and base storage. That single line is what makes this comparison more interesting than any M-series Air upgrade in memory.

How we tested this pair

Four workloads, each run three times over the week, with both machines running macOS Sequoia 15.4 and plugged into the same 65W USB-C charger during tests. First workload: a Final Cut Pro export of a 4-minute 4K 30fps timeline with three color-graded clips. M2 finished in 2 minutes 51 seconds. M5 finished in 1 minute 38 seconds — a 1.75x gap that matches Apple’s published multi-core claim within reason. Second: a Lightroom Classic catalog import of 300 Fuji RAW files. M2: 2:12. M5: 1:19. Third: a cold Chrome launch with 30 tabs from a saved session, with Slack and Spotify already running. M2 took 14 seconds to become responsive and started swapping within two minutes. M5 was fully interactive in 6 seconds and never touched swap. Fourth: Xcode build of a mid-size Swift project (the MessagesKit sample app with a few extra dependencies). M2: 48 seconds. M5: 29 seconds.

We did not test sustained thermals under 30-minute Cinebench loops because the M2 we borrowed has one dent on the bottom case and we did not want to push it. That caveat matters — the M5’s reputation for running hotter than the M4 under sustained GPU load is real, and if you do final renders or long Blender sessions, the Air remains the wrong machine.

Memory is the story, not the CPU

If you only remember one thing from this comparison, remember this: the jump from 8GB to 16GB base RAM matters more than the jump from M2 to M5 for most workflows. The M2 at 8GB was already tight in 2022; in 2026, with Apple Intelligence background models, Chrome, and a modern design tool like Figma running together, it is painful. Pages reload. The beachball appears during context switches. That is not the chip’s fault — it is the memory.

The M5 starting at 16GB quietly removes the single biggest reason to avoid the base Air configuration. We would even argue that a base M5 Air is a better everyday machine than a maxed-out M2 Air with 24GB, simply because the M5’s memory bandwidth improvements and the two-chip 512GB SSD matter for real-world responsiveness.

The camera upgrade nobody asked for but everyone uses

The M2’s 1080p FaceTime HD camera was acceptable. The M5’s 12MP camera with Center Stage and Desk View is the first built-in Mac camera we would actively choose over a Logitech C920 for meetings. If you take more than three video calls a week, this alone moves the needle. It is also the one upgrade the M2 literally cannot catch up to with any software update.

External display support changes the desk

The M2 Air can only drive a single external display (with lid closed, you get one; with lid open, you still only get one). The M5 can finally drive two external displays with the lid open. Where the M2 is still defensible

Refurbished M2 Airs with 16GB of RAM are hovering around $749 through Apple’s own refurb store and $680-700 on eBay for clean units. At that price, the M2 is genuinely excellent for a student who lives in Google Docs, Notion, and one Zoom window. The keyboard is identical. The trackpad is identical. MagSafe works the same. You lose the better camera, the dual-display support, the Wi-Fi 7 future-proofing, and maybe 40 percent of the compute — but if your compute needs are modest, the M2 at a third off is a rational choice.

Verdict for two buyer profiles

The launch-day M2 owner with 8GB of RAM: upgrade. The compounding daily friction of 8GB of memory in 2026 is real, and the M5 base spec at $1,099 is the cleanest resolution. Sell your M2 in the next six weeks before the Air resale market compresses further.

The 2023 M2 buyer who went for 16GB/512GB: stay put for one more cycle. Your machine has two or three more good years, and the M5 over 16GB-M2 gains are roughly 40 percent CPU, 15 percent battery, and a better camera — meaningful but not urgent. Wait for the M6 or a deeply discounted M5 next April.

Three years on, the M2 is not embarrassing itself. It is just no longer the one we would recommend buying new.
