Apple Watch Ultra 2 Review: Do You Really Need This Much Watch?

Published on

Let’s be brutally honest: most people who buy the Apple Watch Ultra 2 will never dive to 40 meters, climb a mountain, or run an ultramarathon. They buy it because it’s the biggest, most capable, most attention-grabbing Apple Watch, and that’s perfectly fine.

We’ve worn the Ultra 2 for four months — through desk work, gym sessions, weekend hikes, and one actual scuba dive — and our take is nuanced. It’s simultaneously the best Apple Watch ever made and the hardest to justify for most wrists.

The Size Makes a Statement

At 49mm and 14.4mm thick, the Ultra 2 is unmistakably large. It dominates your wrist. People notice it. Depending on your wrist size and personal style, this is either a feature or a problem.

On larger wrists, it looks proportional and purposeful — like a tool watch that means business. On smaller wrists, it looks like you strapped a hockey puck to your arm. We recommend trying it on in person before buying. No amount of spec-reading will tell you how 61.4 grams of titanium feels on your particular wrist.

We also compare it directly to the mainstream model in our Apple Watch Ultra 2 vs Series 10 article. The natural titanium finish has held up beautifully. After four months of daily wear including workouts and yard work, our unit shows no visible scratches. The flat sapphire crystal is equally resilient — not a mark on it. Build quality is phenomenal.

Battery Life: The Real Killer Feature

Here’s where the Ultra 2 genuinely earns its premium. We consistently get 36-40 hours of battery life with the always-on display enabled, GPS workouts, and normal notification usage. That’s two full days of real-world use.

This changes how you use an Apple Watch. No more nightly charging anxiety. No more skipping sleep tracking because you forgot to charge. You charge every other evening and never think about it. For a device category plagued by battery limitations, the Ultra 2 solves the problem through brute force.

In low power mode, Apple claims up to 72 hours. We tested this during a weekend camping trip and managed about 60 hours with hourly heart rate checks, occasional GPS logging, and very minimal notification use. It’s enough for a multi-day adventure.

The Display Is Magnificent

3,000 nits. That’s the peak brightness, and it’s visible in any condition. Direct noon sunlight in the desert? Completely readable. The 49mm flat display is also the largest ever on an Apple Watch, and it makes every complication, every notification, every workout metric easier to read.

The flat crystal (versus the curved edges of the standard Apple Watch) makes the display feel even larger than its specifications suggest. Edge-to-edge content looks fantastic. The Wayfinder watch face, designed specifically for the Ultra, takes full advantage of the screen real estate with eight complications plus a compass.

Action Button: Surprisingly Useful

The Action Button on the left side of the case is customizable — set it to start a workout, launch a specific app, toggle the flashlight, drop a waypoint, or activate a shortcut. We set ours to start an outdoor walk workout, and the convenience of one-press workout initiation is addictive.

The button has a satisfying click with enough resistance to prevent accidental presses. It’s protected by a raised guard, so we never triggered it unintentionally during four months of use. Thoughtful design.

Adventure Features Most Won’t Use

The Ultra 2 includes a depth gauge accurate to 40 meters, a dive computer mode (certified EN 13319), a Siren function audible at 86 decibels up to 180 meters away, dual-frequency GPS (L1 and L5) for better accuracy in urban canyons and dense forest, and an 86-decibel siren for emergencies.

We used the dive computer during a recreational scuba session, and it worked flawlessly — tracking depth, water temperature, and bottom time with the same accuracy as our dedicated Suunto dive computer. For recreational divers, it’s one less device to bring.

The dual-frequency GPS was noticeably more accurate than the standard Apple Watch during trail runs in a heavily forested area. Our route tracking was cleaner, with fewer GPS artifacts and wandering track points.

But here’s the thing: if you don’t dive, hike, or run in GPS-challenging environments, these features provide zero daily value. You’re paying for capabilities that sit dormant.

As a Daily Watch

For everyday use, the Ultra 2 excels in ways that justify its price through experience quality rather than feature utilization. The larger screen makes every interaction easier. The brighter display is readable in any situation. The battery life eliminates a daily chore. The titanium build inspires confidence.

Notifications are easier to read. Workout metrics are more glanceable. Maps directions are more visible. These small quality-of-life improvements compound over days and weeks into a genuinely better daily experience.

The Price Question

At $799, the Ultra 2 costs $400 more than the Series 10 aluminum. Is it worth the premium?

If you’re an athlete, diver, or outdoor enthusiast who will use the specific features: absolutely. The Ultra 2 is the best tool watch in its category.

If you want the best Apple Watch regardless of use case: probably. The battery life and display quality alone make daily life with the Ultra 2 measurably better.

If you’re price-conscious and the Series 10 meets your needs: no. The Series 10 does 90% of what the Ultra 2 does at half the price. We compare them head-to-head in our Apple Watch Ultra 2 vs Series 10 article.

The Verdict

The Apple Watch Ultra 2 is the best smartwatch ever made — too much watch for most people and exactly enough for the adventurers it was designed for. If the battery life, display brightness, and build quality justify the premium for your lifestyle, you won’t regret it. Just be honest with yourself about whether you’re buying a tool or a trophy.

OnVerdict Score: 8.5/10 — Magnificent overkill. Whether that’s a compliment depends on you.
