AirPods Pro 3 Review: The Best Earbuds You Might Not Need to Buy

Published on

Apple made the best wireless earbuds even better and somehow made them harder to recommend. Not because the AirPods Pro 3 are disappointing — they’re genuinely excellent — but because the Pro 2 were already so good that the improvements feel like diminishing returns for anyone who already owns a pair.

We’ve been wearing the AirPods Pro 3 daily for six weeks. Commutes, gym sessions, office work, flights, and far too many late-night podcast binges. Here’s the unfiltered take.

Sound Quality: Subtle But Appreciated

The H3 chip enables more sophisticated audio processing. Compared to the H2-powered Pro 2, the Pro 3 deliver slightly wider soundstage, marginally tighter bass, and a touch more clarity in the mids.

We noticed the difference most in complex orchestral music and dense hip-hop productions. Individual instruments are easier to pick out. Bass hits feel more intentional — punchy without bleeding into the midrange.

For podcasts and audiobooks — which, let’s be honest, is what most people use AirPods for — the improvement is minimal. Spoken word already sounded great on the Pro 2.

Spatial Audio with head tracking is improved. The sound field feels more convincing, and there’s less of that “processing” quality that occasionally reminded you the effect was artificial. Watching Dolby Atmos movies with the Pro 3 is a genuinely immersive experience, especially on a long flight.

Honestly, if sound quality is your primary concern, dedicated audiophile IEMs at this price point still deliver better raw audio. And if you’re considering over-ear headphones, see our AirPods Pro 3 vs AirPods Max comparison. But for the combination of ANC, convenience, and ecosystem integration, nothing sounds better than the Pro 3 in the true wireless category.

Noise Cancellation: Meaningfully Better

This is where the Pro 3 earns its upgrade. The ANC improvement over the Pro 2 is the most noticeable day-to-day enhancement.

Specifically, the Pro 3 handles irregular, dynamic noise better. A coffee shop with conversation, clattering cups, an espresso machine, and background music — the Pro 2 would occasionally struggle with the shifting noise profile, creating a subtle “pumping” effect. The Pro 3 handles this seamlessly.

On airplanes, the improvement is meaningful. The Pro 3 blocks engine noise slightly better than the Pro 2, and — more importantly — blocks the variable noise of neighboring passengers and announcements more effectively in ANC mode.

Transparency mode is also refined. Voices sound more natural, and the transition between ANC and Transparency via Adaptive Audio is smoother. We noticed fewer jarring switches when moving between environments.

We put it this way: the Pro 2’s ANC was an 8.5 out of 10. The Pro 3’s is a 9.5. That might not sound like much, but you feel the difference in noisy environments every single day.

Battery: The Quiet Win

Seven hours per charge versus six. One extra hour doesn’t sound revolutionary until you’re four hours into a flight and your Pro 2 gives you the low battery warning while the Pro 3 still has three hours left.

The case holds 34 hours total (up from 30). In practice, this means charging the case every 4-5 days with heavy use instead of every 3-4 days. A quality-of-life improvement that adds up.

MagSafe and USB-C charging are both supported. Charging speed is slightly improved — about 5 minutes for an hour of listening time. Fast enough for those “oh no, my earbuds are dead and my commute starts in 10 minutes” moments.

Comfort and Fit

The Pro 3’s form factor is nearly identical to the Pro 2. At 5.2g per earbud (versus 5.3g), the weight difference is imperceptible.

We wore them for 4+ hour sessions without discomfort. The ear tips seal well, and the pressure balance during ANC use doesn’t cause that “vacuum” feeling some earbuds produce.

If the Pro 2 fit you, these fit you. Apple hasn’t reinvented the ergonomics — just refined the internal components.

IP54: Real Protection

The upgrade from IPX4 to IP54 adds dust resistance to the existing water resistance. For gym use, this provides more confidence. Sweat and dust from chalk or sandy outdoor environments are no longer concerns.

In practice, we used them through intense workouts without any issues. The Pro 2 handled sweat fine too, but the IP54 rating means Apple is formally guaranteeing protection against fine particles.

Ecosystem Integration

Automatic switching between iPhone, Mac, iPad, and Apple Watch works flawlessly. Conversational Awareness — which lowers volume when you start speaking — has been refined and triggers more accurately.

Find My with Precision Finding works from the case, and the U-series chip’s accuracy is impressive. We tracked down a case that fell between couch cushions in about 30 seconds.

Hearing health features have been expanded. The hearing test, hearing aid functionality, and hearing protection features work with the Pro 3’s improved sensors. For older users or anyone in loud environments regularly, these features add genuine value.

What We’d Change

No wing tips or alternative fit options. Some ears just don’t work well with Apple’s universal tip design. Third-party foam tips help but shouldn’t be necessary at $249.

The case is still glossy plastic that picks up scratches immediately. Apple, please — a matte finish or metal case would match the premium price.

No lossless audio over Bluetooth. This remains a fundamental Bluetooth limitation, not an AirPods-specific issue, but it’s still disappointing for a $249 product from the company that sells Apple Music with lossless.

The Verdict

The AirPods Pro 3 are the best wireless earbuds available if you use Apple devices. Improved ANC, better battery life, enhanced sound quality, and IP54 protection make them a meaningful upgrade over the original Pro and a solid choice for new buyers.

If you own AirPods Pro 2 that still have good battery health, the upgrade is harder to justify. We break down every difference in our AirPods Pro 2 vs AirPods Pro 3 comparison. The improvements are real but incremental. Wait for battery degradation to force your hand, or wait for the Pro 4.

For everyone else — first-time AirPods buyers, people upgrading from standard AirPods, or Pro 1 owners — the AirPods Pro 3 are an easy recommendation. Nothing else combines this level of sound quality, ANC, and Apple ecosystem integration.
