AirPods Pro 3 Chip: H2 or H3? What Apple Changed

AirPods Pro 3 use the H3 chip. Not H2. If you’ve been Googling “AirPods Pro 3 H2 or H3” — there’s your answer. Apple moved to a brand-new silicon generation for the third-generation Pro earbuds, and the differences are more meaningful than the name change suggests.
What the H3 Chip Actually Does
The H3 isn’t just an incremental bump. Apple redesigned the audio processing pipeline from the ground up. Here’s what changed in practice:
Active Noise Cancellation got dramatically better. Apple claims 2x improvement over the H2’s already-excellent ANC, and in our testing, that tracks. The H3 processes ambient sound faster and adapts to changing noise environments almost instantly. Walking from a quiet street into a busy cafe? The Pro 3 adjusts in under a second. The Pro 2 took noticeably longer.
Adaptive Audio is smarter. This was already the best feature on the Pro 2 — that mode where ANC and Transparency blend automatically based on your environment. The H3 takes it further with what Apple calls “personalized sound profiles.” The chip learns your listening patterns over time and pre-adjusts before you even notice a change. Conversation Awareness now activates faster and sounds more natural when it lowers your music.
Hearing health features are H3-exclusive. This is the big one. The clinical-grade hearing test, hearing aid functionality, and real-time audiogram features that Apple announced — they all require the H3’s dedicated processing cores. You cannot get these on AirPods Pro 2 with a software update. The hardware literally doesn’t support the continuous low-latency audio processing these features demand.
Gaming latency dropped. Apple hasn’t published exact numbers, but the H3 brings noticeably lower Bluetooth audio latency in gaming mode. We tested with Apple Arcade titles on iPhone 17 and the lip-sync gap is essentially gone. On the H2, there was a subtle but perceptible delay.
Battery life improved. The H3 is more power-efficient, stretching listening time to 7 hours (up from 6 on the H2) without changing the physical battery size much. The case also gained capacity — 34 total hours versus 30.
H1 vs H2 vs H3: Quick Comparison
| Feature | H1 (AirPods Pro 1) | H2 (AirPods Pro 2) | H3 (AirPods Pro 3) |
|---|---|---|---|
| ANC | Good | Great | Excellent (2x H2) |
| Transparency Mode | Basic | Adaptive transparency | Adaptive Audio + personalized profiles |
| Conversation Awareness | No | Yes | Yes (faster, more natural) |
| Hearing Test / Hearing Aid | No | No | Yes (clinical-grade) |
| Spatial Audio | Yes | Yes (personalized) | Yes (improved head tracking) |
| Battery (earbuds) | 4.5 hours | 6 hours | 7 hours |
| Battery (total w/ case) | 24 hours | 30 hours | 34 hours |
| Water Resistance | IPX4 | IPX4 | IP54 |
| Bluetooth | 5.0 | 5.3 | 5.3 |
| Gaming Low Latency | No | Basic | Enhanced |
| USB-C | No | Yes (later revision) | Yes |
The jump from H1 to H2 was significant. The jump from H2 to H3 is arguably bigger because of the hearing health features alone — that’s an entirely new category of functionality, not just better numbers on existing specs.
Should You Upgrade from AirPods Pro 2?
Honestly, it depends on which features matter to you.
Upgrade if: You want the hearing health features (hearing test, hearing aid mode), you’re in noisy environments daily and want the best possible ANC, or your Pro 2 battery has degraded after two-plus years of use. The IP54 dust resistance is also a real upgrade if you wear them at the gym or outdoors frequently — IPX4 only covers water splashes, not dust.
Skip if: Your Pro 2 still sound great and hold a charge. The ANC improvement, while real, isn’t dramatic enough to justify $249 if your current pair works fine. Adaptive Audio on the H2 is already very good.
Coming from AirPods Pro 1 or older? Don’t even hesitate. The H3 is three generations ahead, and you’ll notice the difference within seconds of putting them on.
The Bottom Line
The H3 chip is genuinely new silicon, not a rebadged H2. The hearing health features alone make it the most significant upgrade in AirPods history — Apple essentially turned earbuds into a regulated medical device. Whether that justifies upgrading from a perfectly functional pair of Pro 2 is a personal call, but if you’re buying fresh, the Pro 3 is the obvious choice.
