MacBook Neo vs MacBook Air M4: $599 vs $999 (2026) — OnVerdict

The MacBook Neo costs $599. The MacBook Air M4 costs $999. That’s a $400 gap — almost the price of an iPad. Both run macOS, both are thin and light, both have gorgeous displays. So what exactly does $400 buy you?

More than you’d think. But maybe less than you need.

Performance: A18 Pro vs M4

This is the clearest difference. The M4’s 10-core CPU (4 performance + 6 efficiency) is roughly 60% faster than the A18 Pro in multi-core workloads. For tasks like video export, photo batch processing, code compilation, and heavy multitasking — the Air pulls away decisively.

For everyday tasks — browsing, email, documents, streaming, light photo editing — both feel identical. The A18 Pro is not slow. It’s a phone chip that punches well above its class. But the M4 is a laptop chip designed from the ground up for sustained performance, and that gap shows in demanding work.

The RAM Question

8GB vs 16GB. This is arguably more important than the chip difference.

With 8GB, the Neo handles 20 Safari tabs, Spotify, and a document editor comfortably. Push beyond that — add Figma, a video call, and a few more apps — and you’ll notice memory pressure. macOS swaps to SSD, and things slow down subtly.

With 16GB, the Air doesn’t flinch at that same workload. You can keep more apps open, run more demanding software, and the Mac stays responsive longer. Over 3-4 years of use, the RAM gap will matter more, not less.

Display

Both are Liquid Retina IPS panels, but the Air’s display is better in every measurable way. P3 wide color gamut vs sRGB means more vivid, accurate colors. 500 nits vs ~470 nits is marginal, but the P3 color space is a real upgrade if you work with photos or design.

For text, video, and general browsing, both look great. The Neo’s display is excellent for its price. It’s only “worse” when directly compared to the Air.

Who Should Buy Which

Get the MacBook Neo ($599) if:

  • Your laptop is mostly for browsing, writing, streaming, and light productivity
  • You’re a student on a budget
  • You’re buying a second Mac for travel
  • You don’t need more than 8GB of RAM for the next 2-3 years

Get the MacBook Air M4 ($999) if:

  • You need 16GB of RAM (development, design, heavy multitasking)
  • You use professional creative apps
  • You want the better display, webcam, and port quality
  • You plan to keep this laptop for 4+ years

Our Verdict

The $400 gap buys you double the RAM, a significantly faster chip, a better display, a better webcam, and better ports. If you can afford it, the MacBook Air M4 is the better long-term investment.

But the MacBook Neo is not a compromise Mac — it’s a full, capable Mac at a price that was unthinkable two years ago. For the right user, it’s the smarter buy.
