MacBook Neo vs iPad Air M4: Both $599, Completely Different Machines

Apple is now selling a laptop and a tablet for the exact same price. The MacBook Neo and the iPad Air M4 both cost $599. Both run on Apple silicon. Both have gorgeous displays. And yet they’re built for completely different people.
This is not a “which is better” comparison. It’s a “which is right for you” comparison. Because picking the wrong one means spending $599 on a device that frustrates you.
The Spec Sheet
| Feature | MacBook Neo | iPad Air M4 11” |
|---|---|---|
| Price | $599 | $599 |
| Chip | A18 Pro (6-core CPU) | M4 (8-core CPU) |
| RAM | 8GB | 12GB |
| Storage | 256GB | 128GB |
| Display | 13” Liquid Retina, sRGB | 11” Liquid Retina, P3 |
| Weight | 1.24 kg (2.73 lbs) | 462g (1.02 lbs) |
| Ports | 2x USB-C | 1x USB-C |
| Input | Keyboard + Trackpad | Touch + Apple Pencil Pro ($129 extra) |
| OS | macOS | iPadOS |
| Battery | 16 hours | 10 hours |
Right away, two things jump out. The iPad has a significantly better chip (M4 vs A18 Pro) and more RAM (12GB vs 8GB). But the MacBook has double the storage, a much bigger screen, and a keyboard built in.
Performance: M4 vs A18 Pro
On paper, the iPad Air M4 is the more powerful device. The M4 chip has 8 CPU cores and a 10-core GPU versus the A18 Pro’s 6 CPU cores and 5-core GPU. In benchmarks, the M4 is roughly 40-60% faster in multi-core tasks.
But the iPad can’t use that power the same way. iPadOS limits what you can do with M4-class performance. You can’t run full desktop apps, you can’t have true overlapping windows (Stage Manager tries, but it’s not macOS), and you can’t use Terminal, Docker, or professional development tools.
The MacBook Neo’s A18 Pro is slower, but macOS lets you use every bit of it. You get a full desktop OS with no artificial limitations.
The $599 Trap
The iPad Air M4 costs $599. But to use it productively, you need:
- Apple Pencil Pro: $129
- Magic Keyboard Folio: $249 (or $299 for Magic Keyboard)
- Total: $977 - $1,047
The MacBook Neo costs $599 and comes with a keyboard and trackpad built in. You might add a $35 USB-C hub. Total: $634.
If you’re buying the iPad as a laptop replacement, the true cost is nearly double the MacBook Neo. That’s the $599 trap.
Who Wins: Use Case by Use Case
| Task | Winner | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Writing essays/documents | MacBook Neo | Real keyboard, full desktop apps |
| Note-taking in class | iPad Air M4 | Apple Pencil handwriting |
| Web browsing | MacBook Neo | Bigger screen, better multitasking |
| Drawing/illustration | iPad Air M4 | Procreate + Apple Pencil, no contest |
| Coding | MacBook Neo | Terminal, Xcode, VS Code — iPadOS can’t |
| Video editing | iPad Air M4 | M4 chip, but limited app selection |
| Netflix/streaming | iPad Air M4 | Lighter, portable, touch-friendly |
| Spreadsheets | MacBook Neo | Full Excel/Sheets, keyboard shortcuts |
| Photo editing | Tie | Both capable, different workflows |
| Gaming | iPad Air M4 | Better GPU, more touch-native games |
The “What If I Buy Both?” Question
MacBook Neo ($599) + iPad Air M4 ($599) = $1,198. A MacBook Air M5 costs $1,099.
If you’re considering both, ask yourself: would one MacBook Air M5 with a bigger screen, 16GB RAM, and 512GB storage serve you better than two separate devices? For most people, yes. The Air M5 does everything the Neo does, plus it can drive two external monitors.
But if you specifically need handwriting (student) AND a desktop OS (coding), then the two-device setup makes sense.
Our Verdict
Get the MacBook Neo if you need a computer. Writing, browsing, coding, spreadsheets, email — anything that requires a keyboard and a real OS. The Neo is a complete machine at $599.
Get the iPad Air M4 if you need a creative tool. Drawing, handwritten notes, reading, portable media consumption. But budget $130-300 extra for Pencil and keyboard.
Don’t get the iPad if you’re trying to replace a laptop. iPadOS is not macOS. It never will be. The $599 iPad becomes a $1,000 laptop that still can’t do everything a $599 MacBook Neo can.
