The 2026 iPad Air M4 created an awkward problem for the iPad Pro M4. They share the same chip. The Air has more RAM (12GB vs 8GB base). And the Air costs $400 less. So what exactly is $400 buying Pro customers?

The Pro’s Three Advantages
1. The OLED display. This is the real differentiator. The Pro’s Ultra Retina XDR OLED with ProMotion (120Hz) is gorgeous — true blacks, 1000 nits sustained, 1600 nits HDR. The Air’s LCD is good but visibly inferior in HDR content and dark room viewing. For artists and video professionals who need color accuracy and contrast, the Pro display is non-negotiable.
2. Face ID. The Pro uses Face ID; the Air uses Touch ID in the power button. Face ID is more convenient when the iPad is on a desk or in a keyboard case. Not a dealbreaker, but a quality-of-life upgrade.
3. Quad speakers. Four speakers vs two. The Pro’s spatial audio with Dolby Atmos is significantly better for media consumption. If you watch a lot of video on your iPad, this matters.
The Air’s Surprise Win: RAM
The Air’s 12GB RAM vs the Pro’s 8GB base is genuinely embarrassing for the Pro. In multitasking scenarios — Stage Manager with multiple apps, heavy Safari usage, large document editing — the Air can actually outperform the base Pro in memory-dependent tasks. Apple will almost certainly bump the Pro’s RAM when the M5 Pro iPad launches, but right now, this is a real advantage for the Air.

Buy the iPad Pro M4 if: you’re an artist using Procreate or Affinity, a video editor who needs HDR accuracy, or someone who values the premium display and quad speakers enough to pay $400 for them.
