Apple Watch Ultra 3 vs Series 11: Which Fits You? — OnVerdict

The Apple Watch Ultra 3 costs $799. The Series 11 costs $399. Both run watchOS 12, both track the same health metrics, and both pair with your iPhone identically. So what does the extra $400 buy you? Honestly, it buys you two things that matter and a bunch of things that don’t — unless your wrist regularly encounters ocean water, mountain trails, or multi-day adventures.

We wore both watches simultaneously (one on each wrist, yes we looked ridiculous) for three weeks across gym sessions, outdoor runs, swimming, and regular desk-bound workdays to find out where the Ultra’s premium actually shows up.

Battery Life: The Ultra’s Killer Feature

The Ultra 3 lasts 42 hours. The Series 11 lasts 24 hours. This is the single most impactful difference between these watches. With the Ultra, you charge every other day. With the Series 11, you charge every night.

This means the Ultra can track your sleep AND still have juice for a full next day. The Series 11 can track sleep too, but you’ll need to find a charging window during the day if you don’t want it dying by evening. Over months of ownership, this daily charging ritual becomes genuinely annoying, and the Ultra’s two-day battery transforms how you use the watch.

Durability: Titanium vs Aluminum

The Ultra 3’s titanium case and flat sapphire crystal are significantly more durable than the Series 11’s aluminum and Ion-X glass. After three weeks, our Series 11 had two micro-scratches from doorframes and desk edges. The Ultra looked brand new.

If you wear your watch without a case (as Apple intends) during physical work, sports, or outdoor activities, the Ultra’s build quality is not overkill — it’s appropriate. If your watch lives under a shirt cuff in an office, the Series 11’s build is perfectly adequate.

Fitness and Health Tracking: Identical

Both watches use the same S10 chip, the same sensors, and run the same watchOS 12. Heart rate tracking, blood oxygen, ECG, sleep tracking, workout detection — all identical in accuracy and features. The Ultra doesn’t track your health any better than the Series 11.

The Ultra does add a depth gauge and water temperature sensor for diving, plus a more precise dual-frequency GPS. These matter for scuba divers and trail runners in dense forest. For gym workouts, road running, cycling, and swimming laps, both watches perform identically.

Display and Size

The Ultra’s 49mm display is bigger and brighter (3,000 vs 2,000 nits). It’s noticeably easier to read in direct sunlight and during workouts when your eyes are squinting. The trade-off: it’s a large watch. On wrists under 170mm circumference, the Ultra looks and feels chunky.

The Series 11’s 46mm case sits more elegantly on most wrists and works better with formal or business attire. The Ultra is undeniably a sports watch in appearance.

The Action Button

The Ultra’s Action Button is customizable — set it to start a workout, toggle a flashlight, mark a waypoint, or trigger a shortcut. It sounds gimmicky until you’re mid-run trying to start a segment split with sweaty fingers on a touchscreen. Physical buttons beat touchscreens during physical activity, every time.

Who Should Buy the Series 11

The Series 11 is the right watch for most people. It does everything — notifications, health tracking, fitness, Apple Pay, music — and does it well. If your watch life involves daily charging near a bedside cable and normal non-extreme activities, the Series 11 delivers the full Apple Watch experience at half the price.

Who Should Buy the Ultra 3

Buy the Ultra if two-day battery life genuinely changes your routine, if you participate in outdoor endurance sports where GPS accuracy and durability matter, or if you dive. The Ultra is also the right choice if you’ve owned an aluminum Apple Watch and been frustrated by scratches and daily charging. Those frustrations don’t exist with the Ultra.

Our Verdict

The Series 11 is the better buy for 70% of Apple Watch shoppers. The Ultra 3 earns its $400 premium primarily through battery life and durability — two things that are impossible to replicate with software updates. If either of those pain points resonates with your current watch experience, the Ultra is worth every dollar.
