AirPods Pro 2 vs AirPods Pro 3: Is the H3 Chip Actually Worth Upgrading For?
Published on
The AirPods Pro 2 were already the best wireless earbuds most people could buy. The AirPods Pro 3 are better in ways you’ll only notice if you’re paying very close attention — and that might actually be the problem.
Apple priced both at $249. The Pro 2 is available at steep discounts now (often $180 or less), while the Pro 3 commands full retail. That price difference might matter more than any spec improvement on this list.
Sound Quality
Let’s start with the thing most people actually care about. The H3 chip in the AirPods Pro 3 enables higher-resolution audio processing. In theory, this means better sound staging, clearer mids, and tighter bass response.
In practice? We A/B tested both pairs with the same playlists — everything from hip-hop to classical to podcast dialogue. The Pro 3 sounds marginally better. Marginally. We’re talking about differences that require quiet rooms and focused listening to detect.
The bass on the Pro 3 is slightly more controlled. There’s a bit more separation between instruments in complex tracks. Vocal clarity in podcasts is a touch more natural. But honestly, if someone swapped your Pro 2 for Pro 3 without telling you, it might take you days to notice.
Where the H3 chip does make a noticeable difference is in computational audio features. Personalized Spatial Audio sounds more convincing on the Pro 3, with better head tracking and more precise sound positioning. If you watch a lot of Dolby Atmos content, this improvement is genuinely appreciable.
Active Noise Cancellation
The AirPods Pro 2’s ANC was already excellent — among the best in any earbuds. The Pro 3 improves it further, reportedly by about 20% in Apple’s testing.
We noticed the improvement most in inconsistent noise environments — like a coffee shop with clattering dishes, or a bus with intermittent braking sounds. The Pro 3 handles these transient noises more gracefully, reducing that “pumping” effect where the ANC constantly adjusts.
For steady-state noise like airplane cabin hum or white noise machines, both perform similarly well. The Pro 2 was already top-tier at blocking consistent frequencies.
Transparency mode on the Pro 3 is also improved. Conversations sound more natural, and there’s less of that slightly robotic quality that the Pro 2 occasionally introduced. Adaptive Audio — the mode that dynamically mixes ANC and Transparency — is smoother on the Pro 3 and reacts faster to changes in your environment.
Battery Life
AirPods Pro 3: 7 hours of listening, 34 hours total with case. AirPods Pro 2: 6 hours of listening, 30 hours total with case.
An extra hour per charge and four extra hours in the case. That’s a genuine, tangible improvement. One extra hour means the difference between your earbuds dying on a cross-country flight or lasting the whole trip.
We noticed the Pro 3’s case charges slightly faster via MagSafe too, though the difference is minimal.
Water and Dust Resistance
The Pro 3 bumps up to IP54 from the Pro 2’s IPX4. The practical difference: the Pro 3 has an official dust resistance rating (the “5” in IP54) while the Pro 2 only had water resistance.
For gym use, running in the rain, or dusty environments, the Pro 3 offers better peace of mind. But let’s be real — plenty of people have used AirPods Pro 2 in gyms and rain for years without issues. The IPX4 rating was always sufficient for sweat and splashes.
The IP54 upgrade matters more if you work in construction, dusty workshops, or sandy outdoor environments. For typical urban use, it’s a nice-to-have, not a need-to-have.
Weight
5.2g per earbud (Pro 3) versus 5.3g (Pro 2). A 0.1g difference that no human can perceive. Moving on.
Fit and Comfort
Both use the same ear tip design and similar form factors. The Pro 3 reportedly has a slightly refined shape for better long-term comfort, but in our testing, they felt identical during extended wear sessions of 3+ hours.
If the Pro 2 fit you well, the Pro 3 will too. If the Pro 2 didn’t fit, the Pro 3 probably won’t either. Apple hasn’t fundamentally changed the ergonomics.
Features and Ecosystem
Both support:
- Conversational Awareness (auto-lowers volume when you speak)
- Adaptive Audio
- Find My with Precision Finding (U1/U2 chip in case)
- Personalized Spatial Audio
- Automatic switching between Apple devices
The Pro 3 adds improved hearing health features and reportedly better latency for gaming. The gaming improvement is subtle — we’re talking single-digit millisecond reductions — but competitive mobile gamers might appreciate it.
Who Should Buy What
Buy AirPods Pro 3 if: You’re buying your first AirPods Pro, or upgrading from original AirPods Pro (1st gen) or older. The Pro 3 is the obvious current-gen choice at full retail. Our AirPods Pro 3 Review covers the daily experience in depth.
Buy AirPods Pro 2 if: You can find them discounted under $200. At $180 versus $249 for the Pro 3, the value proposition is incredibly strong. You get 90% of the experience for 70% of the price.
Don’t upgrade from Pro 2 to Pro 3 if: Your Pro 2 still work well. The improvements are real but not transformative. Wait for the Pro 4 or until your Pro 2 battery degrades.
The Bottom Line
The AirPods Pro 3 are the best wireless earbuds Apple has ever made. But they’re an incremental upgrade over the already-excellent Pro 2. The extra battery hour and improved ANC are the most meaningful daily improvements. Everything else requires careful listening to appreciate.
If you can get AirPods Pro 2 on sale, they remain one of the best values in wireless audio. The Pro 3 are better, but not $70 better. If you’re considering over-ear headphones instead, see our AirPods Pro 3 vs AirPods Max comparison.
